Maybe it starts during a winter holiday. You’re sitting outside with a coffee, the sun is shining, and back home the days are cold and grey.
Then comes the thought: why do we only come here for a holiday?
It’s a question more Northern European buyers are asking. And for many, buying a second home on the Costa Blanca is becoming less about owning an
impressive property and more about creating an easy place to escape to whenever they want.
That is also why apartments are becoming such a popular choice.
Less Maintenance, More Time to Enjoy Spain
A private villa, swimming pool and garden can be beautiful. But they also need attention throughout the year — including the months when you’re not in Spain.
For a second home, simplicity has real value.
A modern apartment in a well-maintained community can give you the pool, terrace and Mediterranean surroundings without having to personally manage everything.
You arrive, unpack and start enjoying your stay.
When it’s time to go home, you lock the door and leave.
For buyers living in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Scandinavia or elsewhere in Northern Europe, that can make owning a holiday property in Spain much more practical.
What About the Cost of Living?
We get asked this a lot.
“Is everyday life cheaper on the Costa Blanca?”
In many ways, the lifestyle can feel very good value compared with Northern Europe. Eating out, enjoying local cafés, shopping
at markets and spending time outdoors can all become part of normal life rather than something reserved for holidays.
But owning a property comes with its own expenses.
You’ll need to think about electricity, water, internet, home insurance, community fees, local property taxes and general maintenance.
And every home is different.
A villa with a garden and private pool won’t have the same annual costs as a two-bedroom apartment with communal facilities.
So before buying, we recommend looking at two numbers:
What does it cost to buy?
And just as importantly:
What will it cost to own each year?
Don’t Forget the Costs Around the Purchase
The price in the property advertisement isn’t the complete amount you’ll spend.
When buying a property in Spain, there are additional purchase costs to budget for.
These vary depending on the property and whether you’re buying a new build or resale, but can include taxes, notary and Land Registry expenses,
legal fees and other costs related to completing the purchase.
If your total budget is €200.000, for example, you shouldn’t automatically start searching for properties priced at €200,000.
Work backwards from your complete budget.
It makes the search much easier and avoids surprises later.
One Coast, Many Different Lifestyles
One of the things we love about the Costa Blanca is that there isn’t just one way to live here.
You can enjoy the restaurants and energy of Benidorm, wander through the old town in Altea,
spend the afternoon near the Peñón de Ifach in Calpe, enjoy the atmosphere of Moraira or Jávea, or choose somewhere slightly inland where life feels quieter.
And then there is La Nucía.
For buyers who enjoy sport and an active lifestyle, La Nucía has become particularly interesting thanks to
its extensive sporting facilities and its location close to Benidorm, Altea and the Mediterranean.
You can live away from the busiest beachfront areas without feeling disconnected from the coast.
That’s why we always tell buyers not to choose a town simply because they’ve heard the name before.
Explore a little.
The place you end up loving might not be the one you originally had in mind.
Think About January, Not Only August
This is something we encourage every second-home buyer to do.
It’s very easy to fall in love with a property when the terrace doors are open and the Mediterranean sun is shining.
But imagine the same home when you’re back in Northern Europe.
Who can check the property?
What happens if something needs repairing?
How much maintenance does it need?
Do you need somebody locally who can help?
The best second home on the Costa Blanca isn’t necessarily the biggest or the one closest to the beach.
It’s the property that still feels easy to own when you’re not here.
Buying Abroad Should Feel Personal
Buying a home in another country is exciting, but we know it can also bring a lot of questions.
That’s where we come in.
We are a small, bilingual, women-led buyer agency, and we deliberately keep our approach personal.
We listen carefully to what you’re actually looking for, help you understand the different areas and properties, explain the buying costs and guide you through the process step by step.
We care about the details. We like things done properly, and we believe our clients should feel looked after from the first conversation until the moment they receive their keys and beyond.
We aren’t here simply to show you as many properties as possible.
We are here to help you find the right property for your next chapter on the Costa Blanca.
You should be able to concentrate on the exciting part: imagining your mornings in the sun, discovering your favourite local restaurant and starting a new part of your life in Spain.
Let us take care of the search and the details.
